What Are the Most Common Tree Issues in Delaware County?

Delaware County, PA sits just west of Philadelphia and borders New Jersey, and over half a million residents call Delaware County home. Known for old and unique architecture, gorgeous greenery and hiking trails, and excellent eateries, Delaware County is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. We place great importance on maintaining the health and safety of our trees, which is why it’s important for everyone to be aware of common tree problems so that we can work together to keep our city green. The three most common tree problems we see in our community include fire blight, powdery mildew, and verticillium wilt.

Fire Blight

Fire blight is a bacterial disease that frequently attacks pear and apple trees, though it can also attack crab apple, hawthorn, and several other types of trees in Pennsylvania. This disease often enters trees through flowers or wounds, and it can be transported from tree to tree through rain, insects, and other similar methods. Fire blight presents itself as dead or blackened flower parts, shriveled and crooked branches, and cream-colored ooze coming out of cankers. This disease is sometimes relatively mild, though it is known to kill trees, especially those that are already weak or sick from other illnesses or injuries.

Powdery Mildew

Have you ever noticed fluffy, white film spots on leaves? If so, you may have seen powdery mildew in action. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that can cause leaves to wilt and die, and it absolutely thrives in moist and warm environments like what our summers provide. Its spores can flow from plant to plant in a breeze, so it can attack multiple trees within close proximity in a short span of time. The good news about powdery mildew is that it usually doesn’t kill trees, though it can weaken them and make them more susceptible to other more deadly conditions.

Verticillium Wilt

Verticillium wilt is a fungal disease that can affect deciduous trees or shrubs, though it largely leaves coniferous ones alone. The fungus is present in the soil, though it usually lays dormant unless it can enter a tree through an injury at the base or within the root system. Once it is able to infiltrate, it blocks a tree’s ability to transport water throughout its trunk and branches. Some larger trees can live for a few years after becoming infected, but many trees don’t survive for more than two or three years.

There are some strategies we can employ to slow the growth and spread of this disease, so look out for smaller and browner leaves than normal, wilting on one side of the tree, and larger seed deposits. All of these can indicate Verticillium wilt.

Does Delaware County Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?

Delaware County is not responsible for taking care of the trees on private property, though the parks department works to keep trees healthy and strong on public property. They actively work to prevent trees from getting sick or infested with pests to keep residents safe from fallen branches and other safety hazards. The County does provide yard waste collection and drop-off, however, which can include small branches or twigs and shrubbery trimmings.

Who Is Responsible for Fallen Tree Removal in Delaware County?

It’s never fun to deal with a fallen tree, especially since trees provide shade, reduce noise pollution, and serve as a home for various wildlife. When a tree falls, it can be hard to know who is responsible for having it removed, though there are a few rules of thumb that apply in most situations.

If you’re a homeowner?

Homeowners have the benefit of making their home and property their own, but this benefit also comes with the responsibility to properly maintain their yard’s trees. This should include proper tree maintenance, such as pruning, but it also includes getting fallen trees removed from your property. It’s impossible to prevent trees from falling over in every instance, but spending a bit on preventative maintenance from our arborists can drastically reduce the odds that you will have to spend a lot of money on tree removal.

If you’re a renter?

In most cases, renters are not responsible for getting fallen trees removed from the property they live on. Rental contracts may state that tenants are in charge of basic lawn care, such as raking leaves and mowing the lawn, but unless the rental agreement states that they also must get fallen trees removed, that responsibility usually goes to the actual property owner. If you notice any trees that look sick or hazardous, you should let your landlord know right away so that they can get them taken care of in a timely manner.

If you’re a landlord?

Property owners are typically responsible for getting a fallen tree removed from their rental property unless there is an addendum in the rental agreement with renters that states otherwise. It’s in your, and your renter’s, best interests to keep the trees on your properties well maintained to prevent trees from becoming ill and falling over in the first place. If you fail to take proper care of the trees on your property, and they cause property damage or harm to your tenants, you can be charged with negligence. This is especially true if your tenants alerted you about trees that look hazardous, and you didn’t take care of them in a reasonable amount of time.

If you’re a neighbor?

We have seen many neighborly disputes emerge due to a tree falling from one neighbor’s yard to another’s. In most cases, where the tree ends up matters more than where the tree was rooted, so the owner of the property where the tree landed will likely be responsible for having the tree removed. It’s best to be proactive and have discussions with your neighbors ahead of time about these scenarios, and many neighbors decide to split tree care costs for trees that are near property lines.

How Does the Soil Affect Trees in Delaware County?

Soil plays a major role in tree health no matter where you are. Our soil tends to be slightly acidic and has a significant concentration of clay. Both of these aspects are helpful to tree health, as most plants prefer soil with a pH slightly below 7.0 with enough clay to adequately absorb water to keep them hydrated. Soil composition varies widely from yard to yard, however, so it’s difficult to say what kind of soil you have on your property.

The best way to know what type of soil you are working with on your property is by submitting soil samples for testing. Getting your soil tested will provide you with a comprehensive analysis of the nutrient composition of your soil, as well as its pH, and many other factors. Once you have more insight into what is in your soil, we can help you take some corrective action to improve the health of your yard’s trees if needed.

Does Weather Affect Tree Health in Delaware County?

We experience hot and humid summers, and cold, snowy winters in Delaware County, and our trees are lucky that they get both enough sunshine and precipitation to usually stay healthy and hydrated. Our main weather issue that can cause tree problems is strong storms that produce lightning and high winds, both of which can destroy healthy and dead trees alike. It’s not always possible to prevent a tree from falling or sustaining damage during a storm, but keeping them well pruned, nourished, and hydrated can help them stay resilient when strong storms do pass through.

What If Dead Trees Are Near Power Lines in Delaware County?

PECO, our public utility company, performs routine maintenance on trees near main power lines in regular intervals. If you notice a dead tree that is close to a main power line or one that has branches getting too close for comfort, you can fill out an online vegetation management form to request assistance from PECO. Trees that are located near power lines can conduct electricity, and contact with the tree can pose a major hazard resulting in severe injury or death.

Trees that are on your property and grow too close to power lines that connect directly to your home are usually your responsibility, but we can contact the utility company to have your electricity disconnected before we begin working on pruning those branches or removing those trees. Either way, if you see an electrical emergency, such as a tree that has knocked over a power line or has become entangled in the cords, contact the PECO emergency line at 1-800-841-4141.

How Much Does Tree Removal Usually Cost in Delaware County?

The average cost of tree removal in Delaware County is around $700, but the actual cost of getting a tree removed from your property can vary widely, typically from around $200 to $2,000. When we calculate tree removal costs, the three largest factors we take into consideration include the size of the tree, the location of the tree, and whether other services are needed.

Size of the Tree

Removing little saplings from your property is usually a relatively easy task that doesn’t take much time or many staff members to complete. Larger trees that are several feet wide or stories tall are another story. The larger the tree you need to be removed, the larger your tree removal bill is likely to be thanks to increased labor hours.

Location of the Tree

Removing trees that are out in the middle of an open field is usually a piece of cake to remove, as they pose very little threat of property damage or safety risks. Trees that are in hard-to-reach places or are close to homes may require us to use more specialized equipment or techniques to keep your home and family safe during the removal process. In these cases, you can expect to pay a bit more.

Other Services Provided

Many trees are removed by owners for aesthetic reasons, or because the tree is beginning to interfere with power lines or other similar fixtures. In cases where a tree is getting removed due to illness or disease, we often recommend having fungicides or pesticides applied to nearby trees and shrubbery to prevent the illness from taking hold of other trees and killing them too.

It might not seem like a necessary extra expense, but these extra preventative services can cost much less than having to get the other trees on your property removed later after they come down with the same disease.
