What Are the Most Common Tree Issues in Salisbury?

History, modernization, and industry all come together in Salisbury. Located in Rowan County, it has five historical districts and hundreds of architecturally significant buildings. Here, you can see a desk that was used by President Andrew Jackson when he was studying law.

The Salisbury Township is located at an intersection that was used as a Native American trade route. It has gained recognition as being the oldest continually populated colonial town in western North Carolina.

In more recent times, industry has taken off in Salisbury. Rack Room Shoes was founded here. Cheerwine has been produced by the same family for more than 100 years in a factory that is based right here in this city of more than 34,000 people.

We have come a long way since the City of Salisbury was established in 1753, and the preservation of history is noticeable around every corner. Part of that is the buildings. The rest stems from keeping the atmosphere of history alive and well through trees and old-time charm.

This is easier said than done, considering there are several diseases that affect the health of trees in North Carolina. Some of the most common include:

Foliage and Leaf Diseases

Brown Spot, Leaf Blister, and Anthracnose are some of the most common in the area. They are most often seen as spots or discoloration on tree leaves. Discolorations may be tan, dark brown, or black. They may merge into dead areas of the leaf. These diseases may be seen from the ground as an area of “dying” leaves amid healthy green ones.

Branch and Stem Diseases

Common branch and stem diseases present in Salisbury include Sudden Oak Death, Wood Decay, and Pitch Canker. Most of these diseases can be seen as areas of missing bark or sores on the trunk, mushroom growth, and dead limbs.

Root Diseases

Root Rot is the most common disease in Salisbury and it can be misdiagnosed. It stems from having too much water in the soil. However, it may appear as wilted, discolored leaves, which most people feel means it needs more water. If you increase the drainage around a tree, you may be able to reverse the damage from root rot.

Diseases That Affect Vascular Structure

There are several diseases in North Carolina that affect the vascular structure of trees. It may appear as an early browning of the leaves or the tree dying back prematurely. It is most noticeable during the autumn. Unfortunately, vascular diseases such as Bacterial Leaf Scorch, are often fatal to the infected trees.

Does the City of Salisbury Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?

Since trees are sometimes messy and may drop leaves and limbs, the Public Works offers a leaf collection service. If you can get the leaves, shrub clippings, etc. to the curb, they will take care of removing the bags of debris. You can only have the debris removed on certain weeks, based on where you live.

In general, there isn’t an assistance program for tree removal in Salisbury. However, there are grants and incentives provided by the City of Salisbury that may help you qualify for them based on your income or the risk that may come with diseased or dead trees. The two programs that are most likely to help are the following:

Park Avenue Housing Rehabilitation Program

This program for residents of Salisbury promises to help improve housing conditions and neighborhood appearance. Tree health impacts both safety and appearance for residential neighborhoods, so if you have a concerning tree, you may be able to get help through this program.

CDBG

This is another program that is designed to help provide residents with a suitable living environment, which could mean they will provide help with tree removal if there is a significant safety risk.

Overall, though, trees are ultimately the responsibility of property owners in Salisbury. You should have them inspected by our arborists often to ensure that they remain healthy.

Who Is Responsible for Fallen Tree Removal in Salisbury?

Trees provide many benefits for residents of Salisbury. The benefits include:

  • Higher home values
  • Improved appearance
  • Reduced energy usage
  • Reduced risk of erosion
  • Clean air

For this reason, everyone in the community is responsible for tree care to some extent. However, on private property, things can be a little confusing for some.

If you’re a homeowner?

As a property owner, you are responsible for the care and maintenance of trees, shrubs, and other vegetation on your property. This means if you have a tree that you need removed, you will need to hire our arborists to get the job done. The exception is trees that may be located in a right-of-way or easement area, such as one that hangs over a sidewalk. In this situation, the City may help you take care of it.

If you’re a renter?

In Salisbury, there are rules that will ensure you are considered a good tenant. Under “Good Maintenance Practices” you will find a section that states you should treat the property as your own. It goes on to say that you should keep the grass and bushes trimmed. This is good advice for tenants to follow.

When it comes to a fallen tree, you must also remember that your landlord is the one ultimately responsible for tree removal. They are the property owner. For proof, just take a look at Section 42-11 of Landlord and Tenant-General Provisions. It talks about the removal of trees being unlawful in some cases, which could mean you face a misdemeanor if your landlord does not approve the removal.

There are some exceptions. For instance, if it is stated in your lease agreement that you are responsible for tree care and maintenance, then you may be able to take care of it for your landlord. This is unlikely. It is not standard on most rental agreements and leases. Therefore, to protect yourself and the property, we recommend that you consult with the property owner.

If you’re a landlord?

A landlord does not sacrifice ownership of their property. Therefore, you should take responsibility and inspect the property for issues consistently. You should always give your tenants notice of when you will come by so that they can ensure they are home if they want to be.

As a landlord, it is your job to maintain the property to meet the minimum living standards. You must know the codes and deal with any issues that you see as it pertains to the home or the property. This includes the removal of trees that are not healthy. Otherwise, if they fall and damage other property, you could be held liable for those damages.

If you’re a neighbor?

In general, if you have a tree that is bothering you or your property, you have the right to trim its limbs to your property line. By North Carolina law, you are forbidden to enter your neighbor’s property to cut a part of their tree. It is also bad if you cause permanent damage to the tree since you may be held liable for damages and decreased property value. Trees on a property line come with joint ownership. You have to agree on its removal. If you cannot come to a mutual agreement, you will likely want to consult with the City of Salisbury about your problem.

If the tree falls because of storm damages, you will be responsible for cleaning up the parts of the tree that lands in your yard. The same is true if one of your trees falls toward your neighbor’s lawn. Your insurance should assist with the cost. If you or your neighbor can prove that a tree was brought down because it was unhealthy and neglected, then the tree owner (primary property of root system) will be accountable. This means that the tree owner’s insurance will have to pay.

How Does the Soil Affect Trees in Salisbury?

In Salisbury, there are several types of soil. The most common types are as follows:

  • Enon-Mecklenburg-Poindexter
  • Cecil-Vance-Enon

In general, both types of soil are very deep and drain well. These solid characteristics are very common in the piedmont region of North Carolina. Fortunately, most trees in the area grow well in these sorts of soil.

The following native trees will grow best in the Salisbury region:

  • Fraser Fir
  • Maple Trees
  • Birch
  • Hickory
  • Dogwoods
  • Beech

These trees are just a few of the estimated 655 species of trees, shrubs, vines, and more that are native to North Carolina.

Does Weather Affect Tree Health in Salisbury?

The climate in Rowan County is mild compared to other areas. During the winter, there is an average temperature of around 42°F. During the summer months, the temperatures stay around 77 to 89°F. There is also an average of approximately 46 inches of rain per year, with only around 7 inches being snow.

For trees, it is a great place to be, with ample rain and sunshine. Trees also benefit because in Salisbury there are four seasons distinct seasons. They are able to go through their natural, yearly growth cycles, with little risk of extreme temperature shifts that may “wake” them too early in the spring or cause them to go dormant too early in the fall.

Salisbury is not in an area that is commonly damaged by hurricanes. Only 32 storms have been recorded in the area since 1930. However, residents are urged to be prepared. Unfortunately, Salisbury is at a higher risk for tornado activity. High winds can take down even healthy trees.

What if Dead Trees Are Near Power Lines in Salisbury?

You should never go near a tree if it is close to or touching a power line. This is for your own safety and wellbeing. If a tree is even a few inches from a power line, a slight breeze can make the tree and line connect. Therefore, if you happen to see a tree near a power line, whether it is alive or dead, you will want to call your local power company immediately. You will also want to alert neighbors to keep kids and pets away from the tree until help can arrive.

How Much Does Tree Removal Usually Cost in Salisbury?

You should expect to spend between $250 and $2,150 for basic tree removal. Most homeowners in Salisbury pay an average price of $550. While these figures are helpful, once we see the actual tree you want removed, it will be easier for us to provide you with a more specific quote. In general though, the cost of tree removal will be impacted by several factors. Here are a few examples.

Situation

If the tree you want removed is near a power line or structure, it will be trickier for us to remove the tree. We will have to take extra safety precautions. This may increase your overall cost.

Labor Fees

Luckily, Salisbury does not require permits to remove trees on private property. However, there will still be costs associated with more complicated tree removals. A tough job may require more than one of our tree removal specialists. You will have to pay for the time of all who show up to do the job.

Size

Large trees are more difficult to remove. This will, unfortunately, increase the price because it may require more people and special equipment to bring it down safely. Small trees, such as those that are less than 10 feet tall, will require less effort and will be more affordable.
