Thousand Cankers Disease is spread by a walnut twig beetle that primarily affects trees in the walnut tree family. The disease primarily began impacting trees in North Carolina in 2010 and has spread at a devastating rate to many forests since its original finding in the area.
Laurel Wilt is a disease of red bays, sassafras, and other plants in the laurel family. The disease is original to Asia but first appeared in Georgia in 203 and has spread throughout the East Coast.
The Southern Pine Beetle is a disease that is caused by North Carolina’s most destructive forest pest. The pests began ravaging the area from 1991 to 2002 when the area was devastated by these pests. They killed off many trees in the forests, costing the state at least $84 million of lumber due to their destructive nature.

Does the City of Calabash Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?
There are currently no assistance programs in the Calabash area to help residents cover the cost of removing or replanting trees. Each resident is responsible for their own property, whether they are a homeowner or a business owner who has private property. The government of the city of Calabash will take care of removing and replanting trees on public property including on the city’s common grounds, as well as all financial costs associated with maintaining that property.
Who Is Responsible for Fallen Tree Removal in Calabash?
The individual homeowner or business owner is responsible for fallen tree removal and replanting if the tree is on their privately owned property. Otherwise, trees on public lands are removed and replaced by the city of Calabash. The town and the county allot money in the annual budget for tree maintenance, removal, replanting, and other repairs that need to be done to maintain the public land in the area.
