What Are the Most Common Tree Issues in Snellville?

Welcome to Snellville, where the town slogan reads “Everyone is proud to be someone!” This suburb of Atlanta is a great place to settle down if you want to enjoy the perks of living in the city without the annoyances of things like traffic, trying to find parking, and getting a reservation for lunch. Snellville is currently home to 20,077 residents, and many of them work in Atlanta. There is a commuter bus that allows travel without having to drive.

There are so many things to do in Snellville, you’ll never be bored. You can visit the Unique Treasures Flea Market before getting fresh produce from the Snellville Farmers’ Market. The Serenity Salt Cave and Healing Center is the perfect place to relax while looking out for your health. Snellville is also close to Stone Mountain Park and numerous state parks.

There are some hazards to the beautiful trees that call Snellville home, however.

Pests

There are three invasive species in Georgia right now that have it under federal quarantine. These include the Asian Citrus Psyllid, the Citrus Greening, and the Imported Fire Ant. It might seem shocking that such tiny creatures can wreak so much havoc, but they can.

The Asian Citrus Psyllid targets citrus trees. It then moves on to healthy trees, spreading the disease Huanglongbing (HLB) disease, also known as citrus greening disease. According to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, “Citrus greening is one of the most serious citrus plant diseases in the world. Once a tree is infected, there is no cure.”

Disease

Like people and animals, plants can catch and even spread disease. Most of the diseases that plague plant life are either bacterial or fungal in nature. It’s recommended that you talk to our arborists before cutting a tree down that looks diseased. There are some diseases that can be either treated or cured. If not, we’ll help figure out what you need to do.

Does the City of Snellville Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?

The city of Snellville isn’t very enthusiastic when it comes to removing trees. As part of the permit process, if you decide to cut down a tree, you have to replace it with another one that the city approves of. With that being said, there are a few occasions when the city of Snellville will help remove a tree.

If the tree is considered a hazard to the public due to the fact that it’s rotting, diseased, or dying, Snellville may be willing to help cut it down. The city recently cut down a centuries-old Red Oak which stood on Highway 78. The tree was so old that it was there before the Constitution was signed. It was deemed a hazard, however, because it posed a risk to passing pedestrians and motorists.

This isn’t a common occurrence, however. The city of Snellville won’t help remove a tree unless there’s a public hazard, so unless you have a tree that fell onto a public road, you’re not likely to get any assistance.

Who Is Responsible for Fallen Tree Removal in Snellville?

It’s not straightforward when it comes to who is responsible for removing a fallen tree. In most cases, it’s the homeowner or property owner’s responsibility. There are a few cases, however, when it may not be that clear-cut. Where the tree fell, if there are damages, and the condition of the tree all play a role in determining who’s paying the bill.

If you’re a homeowner?

Let’s say that your tree fell on your house. There’s no question that you’re paying for the damages. If you have the proper insurance policy, then your homeowners’ insurance will likely help cover some of the cost.

If you’re a renter?

Renters aren’t required to clear away fallen trees in most cases. Your landlord is responsible for this. The only exception is if it is written into your lease that you are responsible for lawn care management including the care of trees. It’s recommended that you read your lease carefully before signing so that you know what to expect in these situations. Either way, it’s a good idea to get renter’s insurance. It’ll help cover you whether it’s your responsibility to clear away a fallen tree or if it did damage to the home when it fell.

If you’re a landlord?

Unless you had it written into the lease that renters are responsible for clearing away fallen trees, the responsibility falls on you. The only exception to this is if the fallen tree was located on a neighbor’s property and you sent them a certified letter stating that the tree was dying and needed to be addressed. If you have homeowner’s insurance, it will most likely help cover some of the cost of having it removed.

If you’re a neighbor?

This is where things get a little tricky. If your neighbor’s tree falls on your property, then it depends on the circumstances. Was the tree diseased or dying, and was it visibly obvious? If that’s the case, then it’s likely the tree’s owner is responsible, especially if you sent a certified letter letting the owner know it’s a potential problem.

On the other hand, if the tree was in healthy condition and it fell due to a natural occurrence such as a storm, it’s your responsibility to pay. If there are overhanging branches on your property that you want to cut down, the tree owner is required to either have it trimmed or pay for any damages the fallen tree limb causes.

How Does the Soil Affect Trees in Snellville?

The soil in Snellville is mostly sandy loam. Other types of soil are clay loam, clay, highly weathered hornblende gneiss. It’s filled with small pebbles and rocks. This makes it perfect for growing cultivated crops, hay, and pasture. Trees that thrive in this soil include loblolly, shortleaf pine, oak pine, and Virginia pine. It’s also the perfect place to grow apples such as Honey Crisp, Fuji, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith to name a few. Pears, peaches, figs, persimmons, and pecans are other fruits that love the soil of Snellville.

Does Weather Affect Tree Health in Snellville?

Snellville has a humid subtropical climate. This means the summers are mildly hot and the winters are mildly cold compared to other parts of the United States. Residents are treated to all four seasons and don’t have to worry about going through major winter storms.

This doesn’t mean that Snellville’s weather is always perfect, however. It has its fair share of snowstorms that often bring ice and hail. It usually doesn’t last long, but it can wreak havoc during the few short hours it falls from the sky.

Heavy rains are also common in this area, and there can be some mild flooding. If you have flood insurance, this will help cover some of the cost if trees fall on your property. It’s important to note that flood insurance is not covered by homeowners’ insurance. You’ll need to purchase this separately, especially if you’re located in a flood zone.

What If Dead Trees Are Near Power Lines in Snellville?

The City of Snellville will trim up trees near power lines. This is to help prevent trees from falling on the lines during bad weather, causing power outages. How close is too close is something Snellville will have to determine, however. If the tree is not considered close enough for the city to cut down, but you still consider it a risk, give us a call and we’ll take a look.

How Much Does Tree Removal Usually Cost in Snellville?

The cost of tree removal usually varies depending on several factors. With that being said, you’re looking at a minimum of $369.00 for tree cutting services. The average cost is $459.00, and the largest trees can call for more than $1,400.00.

Location

Is the tree you want to cut down located near a building? If that’s the case, it will increase the cost. There’s a lot to take into consideration before cutting down a tree that is located near a building. If it falls in the wrong direction, it could do a lot of damage to the property. This means it’ll probably have to be cut into sections and will require more care while cleaning up if the equipment is needed. This can also pose a problem if there are other trees around that you don’t want to be cut down.

A tree that is in a wide clearing with nothing around it is much easier for us to remove. It doesn’t matter which direction it falls, and there’s no risk of damaging anything. It’s also easier to get our equipment near the tree, which is always a plus.

Shape and size

Some trees are valued for their unusual shapes. While some grow tall and straight, some trees grow in various directions, have multiple branches, and tend to grow wherever they want. This means that it will require more work to cut down each individual branch, plus any off-shooting segments. Rather than one cut to the trunk that will bring the tree down, it requires cutting through several sections of the tree. This not only makes cutting the tree down more difficult, but it also makes cleaning up harder.

Other services

There’s more to cutting down a tree than just sawing through the trunk. Once the deed is done, and it’s down, there’s more work to complete. While some homeowners don’t mind leaving the stump behind, and even use it as part of their landscaping, others want to have it removed.

The trunk will also need to be removed, as well as log splitting and clearing the lot. Chipping the limbs is another option available to you. While it’s not recommended that you use it as fresh mulch since it will pull nitrogen from the soil, once it’s aged, it can be used as suitable mulch, but this takes some time. Other uses for wood chips include using them for a hotbed, compost heap, or to make a path.

If you choose to use these services, it will increase the cost. You can do some of these yourself, of course, if you have the right equipment, but we’ll be happy to take care of it for you. You won’t have to worry about finding the time to do it, or where to take the pieces once you’re done.
