What Are the Most Common Tree Issues in Lagrange?

Lagrange is a small Georgia town located in the West Central part of the state. One of the town’s main attractions is West Point Lake, which runs along the Chattahoochee River at the Georgia-Alabama border. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the recreational opportunities that the lake and surrounding land provide. With its 525 miles of shoreline, the lake offers the chance to enjoy fishing, camping, boating, and more.

The vast forests around the lake make trees an important part of what attracts people to the area. Even in this recreational paradise, however, trees can face particular challenges due to issues such as pest invasion or weather.

One invasive threat to trees in the state of Georgia is the Southern Pine Beetle. This insect is known to invade various types of pine trees in the state, eventually killing them when their egg galleries harm the nutrient-carrying tissues in the tree. If you are concerned that trees on your property have been infested with these insects, keep an eye out for signs such as the following:

  • Pitch tubes and boring dust created by the insects entering the tree
  • Yellowing and browning of needles

Over $7 million worth of pine trees is known to die every year in the state due to this invasive insect.

Littleleaf disease is another disease that has recently wreaked havoc on Georgia pines. In fact, scientists have referred to it as the most serious disease affecting shortleaf pines in the region. The causes of this disease are complex, but they may include invasive fungus, erosion, and low levels of nitrogen in the soil. If you have a tree suffering from this disease, it is likely to die within 12 years of first symptoms.

Root rot diseases are also prevalent in the state. Root rot is generally caused by a lack of drainage in the soils. Georgia’s red clay soil is particularly likely to have this problem, as clay often does not allow for sufficient drainage. Root rot can also sometimes be caused by certain types of fungi. Signs of root rot include yellowed leaves, decaying roots, and stunted growth.

Should you have a tree that you suspect is diseased or otherwise damaged, you can call us here at Tree Triage, and we’ll be happy to assist you in assessing and dealing with the situation.

Does the City of Lagrange Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?

The City of Lagrange does not provide any financial assistance with tree removal problems. If a property owner does not remove a dangerous tree when ordered to do so, the City may carry out the removal and then charge the owner for the costs. In this regard, it is important to note that the City Ordinance Section 25-11-43 related to the required removal of dangerous trees states the following:

“(a) Any dead or diseased tree or limb located on private property within the city which is likely to fall on or across a public way and thus damage persons or property shall be removed by the owner. Removal shall be accomplished by the owner within thirty (30) days after receiving notice of the dangerous tree or limb condition as defined herein.

(b) Any owner who willfully violates this code section shall, upon conviction, be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable in accord with section 1-1-9 of the Code.

(c) Upon failure of the owner to remove the dangerous tree or limb as required herein, the city shall have the right, power, and authority, but not the obligation, to remove such tree or limb which presents a clear and immediate danger of falling on or across any public way. This city may initiate action to have such tree or limb removed under article III of chapter 10-21 of the Code which allows for the removal of nuisances. In such event, and upon order of the Municipal Court requiring such removal by the city, the court shall issue an execution for the costs incurred, the same to be levied upon and collected in the same manner as provided for the levy, collection, and execution of taxes.”

Who Is Responsible for Fallen Tree Removal in Lagrange?

A general principle in issues related to trees is that a tree is yours to deal with if it is on your property. As a result, if your tree were to fall over due to disease or storm damage, you would be responsible, as the landowner, for having it removed. Of course, life is never quite as simple as we would like it to be, so there may be other factors to consider when it comes to tree responsibility. Homeowners, renters, and neighbors may all have different views of the subject.

If you’re a homeowner?

As mentioned above, you can generally expect that if a tree on your property falls over, you will be responsible for paying for its removal. Nevertheless, it never hurts to check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see whether it might assist with your costs in that regard. Many insurance companies cover at least part of the costs of tree removal, particularly if your house has been damaged, although you would also want to consider things like deductibles before deciding whether to take advantage of any insurance assistance.

If you’re a renter?

Renters in Lagrange should not expect to bear the cost of removing any fallen trees at their homes. That is the responsibility of the landlord since they are the property owner. Should you see an issue with a tree on the property where you are renting, it would be best to contact your landlord as soon as possible so that they can take care of the problem.

If you’re a landlord?

Being the property owner, a landlord is be expected to pay for the removal costs of any tree rooted on their property that has become diseased or has died.

If you’re a neighbor?

Things get most complicated when tree issues cross property lines. Who is responsible when a tree rooted in one property falls on another? The University of Georgia Extension program has prepared a helpful rundown of legal issues related to tree ownership in Georgia that can help sort some of these questions out.

Do keep in mind that if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, communication will be key. Particularly if you expect to be in your home for any length of time, maintaining a good relationship with your neighbor will go a long way toward making your time in your home more pleasant.

How Does the Soil Affect Trees in Lagrange?

Georgia has primarily clay soil, which can affect drainage. As a result, trees that are moisture-tolerant generally grow best in this type of soil. One advantage of clay soil is that it tends to attract positive nutrient ions such as calcium, magnesium, and ammonia; and can store large amounts of these nutrients. Plants may grow quite well in this environment. Clay’s main drawback, however, is that it can bind water and nutrients so tightly that they don’t reach the plant’s roots. Thus, property owners dealing with clay soil will want to be aware of this possibility and may wish to plan accordingly.

Does Weather Affect Tree Health in Lagrange?

Severe storms can be common in this part of Georgia, especially in spring and summer. These storms can produce powerful winds and even tornados that can knock trees over or leave them badly damaged. The powerful heat of summer combined with occasional droughts can also have an impact on the health of Georgia trees, as they do not always receive the nutrients they need to withstand the heat.

What if Dead Trees Are Near Power Lines in Lagrange?

Lagrange’s severe storms can blow trees into power lines with some frequency, causing power outages and the potential for life-threatening injury. Should you see dead trees on or near power lines, the best thing to do is to contact the City of Lagrange. They can advise on the next steps or send a crew to remove the tree entirely.

How Much Does Tree Removal Usually Cost in Lagrange?

As with many costs associated with homeownership, tree removal can be pricey. In Lagrange, the average cost to remove a tree is $609, although of course, many factors can make this either more or less expensive. A typical range for tree removal cost in Lagrange is anywhere from $200 to $2,100. While this may seem like more than you’d like to pay, the alternative could be even worse. Dying trees have the potential to fall on your home or someone else’s, and in the worst cases could end up injuring other people. In these cases, you could be on the hook for much greater, more unpleasant costs. It’s always best to deal with such problems before they create larger ones.

Accessibility

If a contractor needs to spend extra time or use extra technology to reach the tree in question, it will of course end up costing the customer more. After all, time is money. If a tree that you want removed is already on the ground in an easily accessible spot (near the road, for example), you are much more likely to end up with a lower bill than if your tree is up a steep hill behind your home, or if our arborist has to work around many other trees in trying to remove the one you’ve called about.

Size

In the case of tree removal, it’s not necessarily true that bigger is better. The more work it is to remove a tree, the more it is going to cost the homeowner. Thus, if you have a large tree to remove, make sure that you budget accordingly.

Others

Some other factors that may contribute to increased costs include:

  • Active power lines around the tree
  • An emergency, after-hours request
  • Heavy equipment required

Now here are some things that might decrease the price:

  • The tree turns out to be smaller than anticipated
  • You have provided a good deal of advanced notice to our crew
  • No heavy equipment is required
