What Are the Most Common Tree Issues in Glendale?

Glendale is the seventh-largest city in Arizona and is home to over 250,000 residents. Glendale has the perfect blend between historical roots and modern amenities and is filled with historical sites such as the Sahuaro Ranch and the Manistee Ranch Park. Hikers will love the wide expanse of parks such as the Glendale Heroes Regional Park, the Thunderbird Conservation Park, the Grand Canal Linear Park, and the Skunk Creek Linear Park. For those looking for a little more excitement in their lives, the State Farm Stadium is a great place to go watch sports or you can roll the dice at Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.

With so many activities dedicated to the outdoors, it only makes sense that there are lots of trees in Glendale. There are several varieties such as Pygmy Date Palm, Desert Gold Peach, Texas Mountain Laurel, Anna Apple, Chinese Elm, and Mulga. Unfortunately, there are a few problems facing tree life in Glendale.

Pests

Humans and pets aren’t the only living creatures to be bugged by insects. Plant life can suffer due to these six-legged pests. Arizona is currently under federal quarantine due to the Asian Citrus Psyllid. This tiny little bug has a talent for destroying citrus plants. It leaves behind burned tips and twisted leaves. If that’s not bad enough, the Asian Citrus Psyllid also causes Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as Citrus greening disease. Once a tree is infected, there is no cure for it. Other pests that can severely harm trees in Glendale include the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle, and the Spotted Lanternfly.

Storms

It takes a lot of work to get a tree to grow. You have to pick a tree that will thrive in Glendale, water it, make sure it’s getting the right nutrients, and keep it trimmed. That can all be gone in just a few seconds when a storm hits. Water runoff, flooding, and lightning strikes can cause a tree to fall.

Disease

Just like us, trees can become infected with a disease that can drastically shorten its life. This can be spread by pests, fungus, and even bacteria. The most common tree disease in Glendale is rot root. It’s caused by damp conditions and poorly drained soil. This ties in the storms and floods that hit Glendale from time to time. Other diseases that can cause your trees to get sick or die include fruit tree disease, cankers, needle cast, and leaf spot.

Does the City of Glendale Provide Any Assistance in Tree Removal Problems?

Glendale doesn’t typically remove trees for private property. This is usually the responsibility of the property owner. If a tree is in the road or considered a public safety hindrance, then Glendale may consider removing it as part of the Right of Way Landscape Maintenance. If it is not on city property or hindering traffic, Glendale will most likely instruct the property owner to remove it. The only other exception to this is if the tree is located near a power line.

Who Is Responsible For Fallen Tree Removal in Glendale?

For the most part, it’s the property owner’s responsibility to remove fallen trees in Glendale. There are exceptions to every rule, however, and fallen trees aren’t as clear cut as they might first seem.

If you’re a homeowner?

If a tree falls on your property, and it’s your tree, it’s typically your job to have it removed and cleaned up. If a tree does fall, your insurance policy may cover the costs of having it removed.

If you’re a renter?

In most cases, it’s the landlord’s responsibility to clear away fallen trees. This is because it’s their property, therefore it is their responsibility. The only exception to this is if it’s written in your lease that you’re liable for removing fallen trees. That’s why it’s very important to read your lease carefully so you aren’t blindsided later on. Either way, it’s a good idea to invest in renter’s insurance.

If you’re a landlord?

If you’re the owner of the property, it’s your responsibility to clear away a tree. Your insurance may help cover the cost of having it removed, especially if it’s considered an act of God. The only possible exception is if it is written into the leasing agreement, or if the tree belongs to your neighbor.

If you’re a neighbor?

It can be very frustrating when your neighbor’s tree is hanging over your property line, dropping leaves on your land, and littering it with fallen branches after every rain. If this is the case, it’s your right to call us to trim the branches back that hang on your property. You may not cut down the tree, or trim it back so far that it kills the tree. Your neighbor is also not responsible for repaying you for any money you spent getting the tree trimmed. If you choose to have it done, you’re the one who pays the cost.

If a tree falls on your land, even if it’s not your tree, it’s your responsibility to have it cleared away. The only exception is if the tree were unhealthy and dying, and you sent a certified letter to your neighbor informing them of this. If this is the case, then your neighbor will likely have to pay. On the other hand, if the tree were perfectly healthy and fell due to a storm, it’s your responsibility to clear it away.

How Does the Soil Affect Trees in Glendale?

Soil plays a huge role in the types of trees you can grow, how tall they’ll get, and how long they’ll live. Arizona is typically considered dry, but during monsoon season, things get decidedly wet. According to the Soil Series released by the National Cooperative Soil Survey, “These are the Anthony, Brazito, Gila, Grabe, Hantz and the competing Pima soils. Anthony, Gila, and Grabe soils are coarse-loamy. Arizo soils are sandy-skeletal. Brazito soils are sandy. Hantz soils are fine.” This wide variety of soils makes Glendale a great place to raise livestock for farmers. It’s also good for crops.

Unsurprisingly, palms tend to be very happy in Glendale. Other trees that thrive in Glendale include citrus plants, flowering trees, and trees that thrive in moist environments. Runoff is a possibility due to heavy rains, which can be a problem for younger trees. However, mature trees shouldn’t be that affected.

Does Weather Affect Tree Health in Glendale?

Weather plays a huge role in the health of a tree. It can boost the tree up, helping it grow tall and strong, or it could rip it up by the roots, and leave a gaping hole where the tree used to stand.

Glendale is often hit by monsoon storms. The stormy season officially starts June 15th and ends on September 30th. During this time, the city of Glendale is hit by powerful winds, lightning, thunder, and some rather beautiful storm clouds. This can lead to floods in the streets that can wreak havoc on the trees. The soil erodes away, which can lead to falling trees. There’s also the risk of lightning striking a tree.

What If Dead Trees Are Near Power Lines in Glendale?

Glendale is taking proactive steps to remove trees that could potentially fall on power lines. Rather than just trimming back limbs that are growing too close, Glendale is cutting the trees down. This is part of a program named Right Tree, Right Place. In other words, trees might be beautiful, but there are some places where they can cause too much damage.

As part of the Right Tree, Right Place program, 167 trees are being removed. It began on November 9, 2020, and Glendale is slowly removing trees that could spark a fire or cause a power outage.

This will take some of the pressure off of property owners who have trees growing near power lines. The program is further great because Glendale is replacing the trees being cut down with trees that are more suitable height-wise. For each tree that will be removed, three will be planted to replace it. In total, 500 new trees will be planted.

How Much Does Tree Removal Usually Cost in Glendale?

The average cost to cut down a tree in Glendale, Arizona is $715. This can range from $260 to over $1,800. The price fluctuates largely due to the scope of the job.

Tree Size

Small trees may not give much shade, but they’re also less expensive to have it removed. Larger trees have a lot of factors to take into consideration when being removed. In many cases, our removal specialists must cut individual branches off. If there are several segments, these will also have to be cut individually. While it might seem easier to just cut down the trunk, it’s not always the safest or most efficient way to go about it.

Location

Where the tree is will factor into the cost. If it’s in a wide clearing with nothing else around it, this means that it’s easy to cut down. It won’t really matter where it lands, so our arborists can get to work with no significant planning.

If the tree is located close to a building, this will likely increase the price significantly. There’s a greater increase of damage if the tree falls the wrong way. This means that our expert needs to plan carefully about where they will cut, what needs to come down first, and if they can cut down the tree at the base, or if the tree must be cut in sections.

Additional Services

There’s more to cutting down a tree than slicing through it with a chainsaw. There are other steps that need to be taken into consideration, even if you decide that now is not the right time to address it. Things like stump removal, limb chipping, trunk removal, log splitting, and lot clearing will add to the price. We’ll be happy to provide you with an estimate when we begin working.
